The Georgian Bay Folk Society and Heartwood Concert Hall are proud to present Mathew Byrne and Sherman Downey, two of Newfoundland & Labrador’s most recognized voices. Roots-rocker Sherman Downey and traditional singer Matthew Byrne, have combined their individual styles and repertoires to create an exciting fusion of traditional and modern sounds.

Since bursting on to the trad scene four years ago with his debut recording, Ballads, Matthew has swiftly earned his place as one of the East Coast’s most authentic and vital traditional voices. With two 2015 Canadian Folk Music Award nominations for Traditional Singer and Album of the Year, Byrne has earned a reputation as one of the finest traditional singers in Canada, whose ballads span generations and continents. The tremendous success of his sophomore recording Hearts & Heroes last year has taken him to concert stages all over Canada and the United States, while his role as singer and song-finder in The Dardanelles continues to showcase his talents to international audiences.

Sherman Downey has been wowing critics and fans since his 2010 debut release Honey for Bees with a melodic roots-rock sound which embraces folk, pop and country. Their November 2013 sophomore effort, The Sun in Your Eyes, has been the best selling album since its release at the legendary Fred’s Records in St. John’s, NL. The first single, Thick as Thieves, earned the boys the title of “Best New Act in Canada” in the CBC Searchlight Contest, beating out over 3000 acts across the country. Matthew Byrne & Sherman Downey have a dynamic stage chemistry that demonstrates how the traditional and modern sides of folk music can be merged seamlessly.

Melodically complex, lyrically cheeky Alysha and her band lay down some of the best pop sounds to come out of Southern Ontario in a generation. Her new CD Womyn is a hit, she just went to India to become a certified Yoga instructor ,she won a songwriting contest in Europe. Juno Nominations, a great touring schedule Alysha is having a great year and there’s no better way to start the spring thaw than with a show from Alysha and her band.

WEEKLY TRADITIONAL MUSIC SESSIONS B – PERF SF-2006New Fiddlefern Country Dancers’ initiatives in 2015 include weekly, open music sessions Tuesday nights, and monthly music, dance and dance calling workshops, in partnership with the Georgian Bay Folk Society. The new weekly, open, participatory traditional tune sessions start Tuesday, January 13 at 7 p.m. at The Harmony Centre, 890 4th Avenue East, Owen Sound. They’re for people who enjoy playing dance music, and for those who want to learn the jigs, reels, waltzes, polkas and more, and eventually play the music for dancers. Fiddlefern organizers anticipate a teaching/learning component each week, followed by a social trad tune session to share music. This should be of interest especially to people who play melody instruments such as fiddle/violin, flute, whistles, pipes, accordion, concertina, banjo, mandolin etc. as well as people pursuing guitar and other instruments more suitable for rhythmic accompaniment. Interested musicians are encouraged to attend. The final show of our great 5th season. It should be a doozy. SOUNDS just keeps growing stronger. We always provide some of the best musicians in the area, performing in an atmosphere they love, and we also toss in some unique samples of spoken word, and, with our open mic spots, a chance to get samples of your stuff heard, too. (Each spot is up to 5 min., approx. and we’ll get you up twice if we can. If you come out to every show, chances are, just as an open micer, you would get 40 minutes over the whole season… and that’s the equivalent to one set at a bar. Another great show line up featuring the music of a trio of musicians who gained their music chops in Owen Sound and have grown into gifted musicians. Talkin’ bout Pete Devlin, Rob Elder, and Joel Morelli. The re-unite every once in a while, and they’re doing it for us this month. Also, this month, instead of a featured poet/spoken word artist, we will be focusing on “storytelling”. You are invited to bring a 3 to 4 minute story that you create, based on truth or utter b.s., and we will try to fit in as many as possible throughout the show. Also the traditional open mic spots where you get up to 5 minutes to perform music, poetry, comedy, …whatever.) SOUNDS is a monthly, free, showcase in its 5th year, featuring guest musicians and poets and also some open mic spots.
