Raised in London, Ontario – resident in Toronto for eight years, Laura Smith made her definitive move to Cape Breton in 1984.
There, encouraged by a vibrant music scene, she was able to make strides in her desire for a life on the stage as a singer, songwriter and actress.
She cut a wide swath in the mid 90’s and early 2000’s. Three critically acclaimed CD’s, two East Coast Music awards, Juno award nominations, a Gemini award and an Honorary Doctorate in Humanities from Mount Saint Vincent University.
After a series of debilitating accidents in 2002, Laura retreated from the music industry, and some feared she would never take the stage again- but you can’t keep a great woman down. Her patient and supportive fans are about to get their reward. Laura launches a new CD, her first in 11 years, in April 2013 at Hugh’s room in Toronto.
She is a distinct and unique Canadian voice and we are happy to welcome her to Summerfolk.
